GFOA is working with practitioners, researchers, and other education finance experts to identify best practices in school budgeting. These Best Practices in School Budgeting aim to leverage the budget process to align resources to student outcomes.
As part of this initiative, several school districts nationwide were selected as pilots to help develop and to test these best practices. The pilots began utilizing the best practices to develop their 2014-2015 budgets. GFOA is incorporating these best practices in the award criteria for a new budget program specific for school districts. The GFOA pilot project to create and implement the Best Practices in School Budgeting was done in conjunction with the school districts used to develop the Smarter School Spending website. Most recently, the Alliance for Excellence in School Budgeting was formed with 30 plus school districts from across the country to continue implementation and refinement of the best practices over the next several years.
The inaugural Award for Best Practices in School Budgeting Program will be available for budgets with fiscal years beginning in calendar year 2017.
