Professionals responsible for internal control have tended to focus their attention on tactical goals and the risk of loss rather than on broader strategic goals and the risk of lost opportunities. This session will focus on ways to bridge that gap. Swedish finance professionals will share their experience with expanding the focus of internal control to focus on creating value, as well as explain how they have been successful at using internal control to improve goal setting at the strategic level. The balance of the session will explore the potential benefits to a local government of applying the Committee of Sponsoring Organizations (COSO) enterprise risk management (ERM) guidance.
