Jake W. Lorentz is an assistant director in the Technical Services Center of the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA) in Chicago, Illinois. He is responsible for the daily administration of GFOA’s Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting Program (Certificate Program) which has grown to over 3,600 participants each year. He also performs technical reviews of Comprehensive Annual Financial Reports submitted to the Certificate Program. Lorentz also provides technical support to state and local governments by answering inquiries on accounting and financial reporting issues. Lorentz has spoken at a number of GFOA national conferences and training seminars on various accounting and financial reporting topics and he is a contributor to GAAFR Review.

Before joining GFOA, Lorentz was assistant director of the Financial Reporting and Analysis Bureau in the Massachusetts State Comptroller’s Office where he was part of the management team responsible for the preparation of the Commonwealth’s Preliminary Financial Report, Statutory Basis Financial Report, and Comprehensive Annual Financial Report. While he was assistant director, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts was awarded the GFOA Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting for four consecutive years. Lorentz’s career also includes holding the positions of assistant project manager with the Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB) and audit manager with Peat Marwick. Lorentz received a BA in Business Economics (with a concentration in accounting) from the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown.
