Engaging the modern citizen effectively requires a sophisticated apporach. Cultural change, social media technology, and seemingly unlimited access to information have generated a civic environment never seen before. This course will highlight innovative ways governments are engaging their citizens through modern technology. Participants will learn what technologies are being used as well as how to deploy them. Special emphasis will be placed on how to leverage social media, open data, and citizen apps to reduce local government expenditures, raise public awareness about government services, and improve service delivery. Leading practices in developing a citizen engagement program will be discussed and lessons learned will be highlighted.
