1. Why did you want to become a CPFO?

I wanted to become a CPFO to increase and broaden my knowledge in governmental finance. I’ve been in the industry for 16 years, but I learned so many things in the program that gave me a new respect for leaders in this industry.

2. What did you learn going through the process?

I have a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting and a Master’s degree in Public Administration, and the CPFO program helped reaffirm some key finance concepts and foundations, and helped me look at these concepts from the public finance perspective. I think the area of study that was most impactful for me in this program was Debt Management. This was the area in which I had the least amount of experience, and I had no idea how much time, effort, and collaboration goes into issuing and servicing debt for a governmental entity.

3. How has becoming a CPFO made an impact on you in your profession?

I am the third CPFO in my organization, and this certification has been one of my goals since I began employment with the City of Norman, OK. Becoming a CPFO has increased my value and acumen in my own organization, and will help me in the future as well should I decide to advance in my career.

4. What would you say to others thinking about becoming a CPFO?

I would encourage others that are thinking about becoming a CPFO to take the leap and invest in themselves. This certification not only distinguishes you from others when networking and job searching, but also helps you attain a broad knowledge base in the industry. I would say the knowledge and information gained from this program is equivalent to at least 5 years of experience in the governmental finance industry.
