WPFN Member Spotlight: Kelly Diaz
This month we're highlighting WPFN Member Kelly Diaz, deputy controller, County of Delaware Controller’s Office, Pennsylvania.
What Leadership style do you find to be most successful and why?
I believe leaders “praise in public, coach in private.” A true leader does not criticize and embarrass employees in front of others. In my experience, leaders who praise all teammates publicly and generously foster a healthy workplace culture with higher retention rates, which is especially important in the public sector.
What is a challenge that you had in your career and how did you overcome it?
Time management, combined with maintaining an energetic pace to keep up, has been the biggest challenge in my career. My husband and I are raising two children with varying special needs. Additionally, I am completing courses at Villanova University to earn a master’s degree in public administration—all while working full time.
Learning to say "no" to additional requests has been key. I also constantly seek out moments of joy such as spending quality time with family, applying knowledge from my classes in a real-life setting, and chatting with coworkers.
What are your favorite ways to relieve stress and/or decompress?
Laughing is my favorite form of stress relief. I wish I had more time for this activity, but sorting through toys, clothes, and other items for donation or disposal is also therapeutic. Lastly, I love to read, especially “cozy” mysteries, such as The Thursday Murder Club series.
