Deputy Fire Chief Douglas Matthijetz has been a Corpus Christi Fire Department member since 1990. He has promoted through all ranks from Firefighter to Firefighter II-EMS, Firefighter II - Engineer, Captain, Battalion Chief, and Assistant Chief. He is currently the Deputy Fire Chief which is second in command. Chief Matthijetz obtained his Chief Fire Officer and Chief Training Officer designations from the Center of Public Safety Excellence. He holds a Master certification as a Firefighter, Instructor III, Fire Officer IV, Fire Inspector I, and Plans Examiner I with the Texas Commission on Fire Protection and a Licensed Paramedic. He holds a Master of Public Administration degree from Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, a bachelor degree in Emergency Management Administration from West Texas A&M University, and an associate degree in Fire Science from Del Mar College. He has been assigned to various disciplines throughout his career including Fire Suppression, EMS Supervisor, Training Division, and Haz Mat and Rescue. Deputy Fire Chief Matthijetz currently oversees four Assistant Chiefs each over a different division, the Emergency Management Coordinator, and the department’s Business Manager. He is responsible for all aspects of the department including the department budget and Capital Improvement/Bond Projects.
