CPE Credits on GFOA's Learning Management System (LMS)
Please read through important information below regarding CPE credits on GFOA's Learning Management System.
CPE credit will be awarded for the live-sessions (e-Learning courses, webinars, and networking events with CPE) you participate in through the LMS platform. CPE credits are not awarded for viewing archived recordings. Awarding of CPE Credit is based on user attendance and participation. If a user does is not online for 50 minutes of each hour of instruction AND does not complete the participation verification (poll questions, verification codes, etc.), CPE Credits will not be awarded.
GFOA will not provide refunds or credits to users who do not meet the attendance and participation requirements and do not receive CPE credit.
For single-day courses (both virtual and in-person), GFOA will not award prorated CPE credits. If all requirements are met, GFOA will only award the amount of CPE credit advertised with the course.
For multi-day courses (both virtual and in-person), if the attendee misses a day of the course but meets all requirements for the other days of the course, GFOA will award credit for those days.
If attendance and participation requirements* are met, CPE Credit will be awarded after the user completes the course evaluation. There may be a delay in awarding credit while GFOA confirms that you have met all requirements. A delay of 2-3 days is normal.
For all learning events on the LMS, participants must complete the "Course Evaluation" to receive CPE credits.

CPE Attendance & Participation Requirements
We are glad you chose us for your professional development needs and are thrilled to be your partner in your career learning journey. GFOA is recognized by the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy (NASBA) as a sponsor that offers continuing professional education (CPE) training, which is required for CPAs to maintain or improve their professional competence and provide quality professional services. The American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) and NASBA jointly publish the standards for Continuing Professional Education (CPE) Programs by which all sponsors must comply to offer CPE to their training attendees.
Recently, both organizations released new standards that sponsors must comply with to continue offering CPE to their constituents. GFOA has changed its processes and protocols to adhere to the new standards.
Here is how the new standards impact you as a training attendee:
- Attendance - the new standards require GFOA to track how long a training attendee is in the live training session. To receive credit, you must be in the live session for 50 minutes per full hour of training to obtain CPE credit. Each participant must enter the webinar through GFOA’s Learning Management System (LMS) individually. The time you begin the training and the time you leave training are automatically recorded. If you are late to the training session, you risk losing the opportunity to earn CPE credit for the session. You will not get credit for the training if you are not there for the full 50 minutes per hour.
- Monitoring - the new standards require GFOA to employ a real-time attendance monitoring mechanism. This mechanism is designed to ensure that you are engaged and paying attention throughout the program. In the training session, you will be required to answer three polling questions per hour to verify your engagement during the 50 minutes of each hour of training attended. The polling questions will be at random points during the 50 minutes, so please be aware of them when they are posed to you. You will not get credit for the training if you do not answer the polling questions.
- Completing the Evaluation and Attaining Your CPE - Approximately one business day after the completion of the course, GFOA will send you an email through the LMS letting you know if you have successfully completed the requirements (attendance and monitoring, above) for the course to obtain your CPE. After receiving the email from the LMS, you will be instructed to go to the LMS to complete the course evaluation, which will unlock your CPE certificate.
We appreciate your patience and understanding as we implement these new standards and are committed to making this process as smooth as possible.
Tracking & Printing CPE Credits
Keep track of your credits as you go along by checking the "My Learning Dashboard." On this page, select "Transcripts/Achievements" for a listing of all of the CPEs you have attained on the LMS. You have an option of printing a certificate for each learning event that you attained CPE for or downloading a PDF of your transcript that lists all of your CPE credits.
Adding CPE Credits Acquired Outside of GFOA
As a service to our members, you can keep track of all of your CPEs, even those attained outside of GFOA, in one location. You can do this also on the "My Learning Dashboard." On this page, please select the "Transcripts/Achievements" option, which will take you to a page titled by the same name. On this page, please select "Add External Credits/Experience." A pop-up window will appear, which will allow you to enter the title of the course, date earned, choose if you want the added courses included in your downloaded transcript, and upload your proof of completion into the system.
GFOA is registered with the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy (NASBA) as a sponsor of continuing professional education on the National Registry of CPE Sponsors.
State boards of accountancy have final authority on the acceptance of individual courses for CPE credit. Complaints regarding registered sponsors may be submitted to the National Registry of CPE Sponsors through its website: nasbaregistry.org.
