1. Why did you want to become a CPFO?

As a professional and individual I have always found ways to improve myself. Like earning my CPA designation in 2019 the CPFO designation was pursued because I knew that it would be a beneficial designation as I looked to move up within government organizations. After reviewing the roadmap and areas of focus for the CPFO designation, I knew it would make me a better more well-rounded professional.

2. What did you learn going through the process?

Being part of a larger organization there are many areas that I am not able to be involved with. Going through the GFOA best practices and other materials as a part of this process gave me the opportunity to learn more about Risk, Compensation and Benefits, and Procurement. Expanding my knowledge base within accounting and treasury management have already led to improvements in daily operations and improved service to our internal and external stakeholders.

3. How has becoming a CPFO made an impact on you in your profession?

I am not as much interested in the impacts the designation will have for me, but the opportunities it will present to impact others. During the process of achieving this designation I have discussed with many individuals why this designation is worth pursuing and why I made the dedicate the time to becoming a CPFO. Professionally, I am excited about the potential doors that will open, based on the involvement requirements, to network with other government professionals and share experiences to better serve our communities.

4. What would you say to others thinking about becoming a CPFO?

This is a very personal decision but what I have told others already is that they should pursue it because they want to improve and grow. This process can be difficult as you balance work duties, personal life, and the studying requirements, if you aren’t approaching this from a growth centered mindset it will become very difficult to continue. If you believe that you are going to make government service a long career choice and want to grow beyond your role, there is no better way to pursue that then through the CPFO designation. If you have made the decision to pursue the designation, hit some quick wins within the areas you currently have experience in, build that tailwind, and maintain a consistent effort studying toward your next exam. Best of luck!
