Julie Weiers, CPFO, is an accountant for the City of Otsego, Minnesota.

Why did you want to become a CPFO?

The value of education and professional development has always been very important to me. Becoming a CPFO intrigued me as I looked at all the areas it covered in government finances. Earning the CPFO certification is important to me and adds value to my career in public finance.

What did you learn going through the process?

I expanded on my knowledge of government finances.  Going through each of the 7 sections of the exam helped me understand more clearly how everything is intertwined.  I have also gained the ability to access very useful resources through GFOA.  These resources will help me in my areas of weakness that I discovered going through the CPFO process.

How has becoming a CPFO made an impact on you in your profession or how do you hope it will make an impact?

Becoming a CPFO has been a goal of mine for quite a few years and I was excited to get started in the process.  It has grown my knowledge of governmental finance and career goals.  I hope that obtaining this certification will help me grow in my career in governmental accounting.

What would you say to others thinking about becoming a CPFO?

Becoming a CPFO is an accomplishment you will be proud of for years to come.  I would encourage anyone in government finance to acquire the CPFO.  You not only gain access to many resources through GFOA but also gain resources through the other participants in the many communities around the world.
