Luca Gonzales, CPFO, is Financial Operations Manager for the City of El Cajon, California.
1. Why did you want to become a CPFO?
I wanted to become a CPFO to build on the knowledge I've gained throughout my career and to develop expertise in areas where I had less experience. I learned about the CPFO program early in my career and aspired to gain the certification as a way to demonstrate my commitment to the field of government finance.
2. What did you learn going through the process?
Going through the CPFO process provided me with a deeper understanding of the diverse and complex responsibilities that government finance professionals handle. It not only broadened my knowledge of technical topics but also gave me a greater appreciation for the skillset required for public financial management. Each exam allowed me to analyze my own agency’s practices and approach my work with a more comprehensive perspective.
3. How has becoming a CPFO made an impact on you in your profession?
Becoming a CPFO has significantly increased my confidence in the knowledge and expertise I bring to my role. It has also empowered me to approach challenges with greater assurance and apply best practices to enhance the quality of my work. The knowledge I gained during the process has not only improved my ability to serve my organization but also strengthened my ability to make meaningful contributions to the public sector.

Pursuing the CPFO certification is a rewarding experience that provides value both personally and professionally. It helps you become a more well-rounded government finance professional, and enables you to better serve your agency.
