  1. What did you learn going through the process?

I have learned A LOT during this process. A major refresher on preparing governmental financial statements. One of my favorite sections was on risk assessment. The presenters provided me with information that was far more in depth than I ever imagined and I didn’t realize how much of a base risk assessment really was to our financial decisions. (I could go on about this!) Another area I enjoyed was compensation and benefits. This was a great refresher for OPEB and actuarial evaluations.

  1. How has becoming a CPFO made an impact on you in your profession?

Being a finance director that doesn’t have his CPA, I hope it creates some trust that I actually DO know what I’m doing. CPA designations are important but I don’t think a lot of people actually understand what it entails. Governmental accounting work is a very small part of a much larger certification. I’ve watched many finance directors let their CPA lapse after they get their positions. I’m hoping that the CPFO certifications shows my commitment to government accounting and my role as a finance director. I also hope as time goes on that the CPFO certification will gain recognition.

  1. What would you say to others thinking about becoming a CPFO?

Don’t give up, anyone can do this. Seeing that they’re our seven test can be daunting but the GFOA has provided a lot of resources to get you through this. Also rely on the CPFO community for support and times you are struggling. I’ve met some amazing people within this community.
